What Is Blade Battery?

With over 29 years of expertise in the battery industry, BYD has set new benchmarks in electric mobility. At the core of every BYD electric vehicle lies the groundbreaking Blade Battery. Globally recognised as one of the safest EV batteries, the Blade Battery has successfully passed some of the industry’s most stringent safety tests. It is engineered to deliver exceptional durability, extended driving range, and a longer life cycle, ensuring both safety and performance for every journey.

01 Enhanced safety

The raw material, lithium iron phosphate has a number of beneficial characteristics: slow heat generation, low heat release and non oxygen release. The unique flat rectangle shape also improves cooling efficiency and preheating performance. Blade Battery has safely passed the nail penetration test without emitting fire or smoke.

02 Optimised strength

Within each pack, the cells are arranged in an array, where every single cell functions as a structural beam, helping to bear external forces. The design incorporates an aluminum honeycomb-like structure, reinforced with high-strength panels on both the upper and lower sides of the pack. This innovative configuration significantly improves vertical rigidity and overall durability. It is this revolutionary structural design that provides the Blade Battery with its optimised strength and exceptional safety performance.

Nail penetration test

The nail penetration test is widely recognised as one of the most demanding methods for evaluating a battery’s resistance to thermal runaway. It is designed to replicate an internal short circuit, a situation that can occur when sharp metal objects pierce the battery during a severe traffic accident. The BYD Blade Battery successfully passed this test — showing no smoke or fire. Remarkably, the surface temperature remained between only 30°C and 60°C, demonstrating outstanding safety performance.

03 Longer range

The Blade Battery achieves more than a 50% improvement in space utilisation compared with conventional battery packs. This advancement not only provides significantly higher energy density, but also translates into a longer driving range, giving drivers greater efficiency and confidence on every journey.
