BYD’s Denza N8 EV Clears 1,000 km Range Mark With 130.15 kWh Battery

Table of Contents

New regulatory filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) show BYD’s high-end Denza N8 electric SUV will offer up to 1,003 km of CLTC range, powered by a 130.15 kWh battery pack. The filings, published this week, also cover the longer Denza N8L.

Up to 1,003 km from a 130.15 kWh pack

The Denza N8 is available with either a 130.15 kWh or a 105.792 kWh battery pack, with pure electric range ratings of 1,003 km, 970 km, 840 km and 800 km depending on the configuration. The extended-body N8L, using the larger 130.15 kWh pack, delivers a CLTC range of 960 km.

The figures make the Denza N8 one of the first production-bound BEV SUVs in China to cross the 1,000 km mark in official filings. The numbers also highlight how far battery energy density has come: BYD is fitting a battery larger than the packs used in most current electric SUVs, while keeping the vehicle in a mainstream premium weight class.

Powertrain lineup

Buyers will have two rear-wheel-drive single-motor options, with peak outputs of 320 kW (429 hp) and 370 kW (497 hp). For those seeking more performance, there is a triple-motor all-wheel-drive setup that combines a 270 kW front motor with two 310 kW rear motors for a combined total of 890 kW (1,193 hp).

Single-motor and tri-motor choices

The spread between the RWD and AWD configurations gives the N8 two very different characters: a range-optimized single-motor version for long-distance touring, and a high-performance tri-motor version aimed at buyers who want flagship acceleration. BYD has not yet published performance times, but the powertrain lineup suggests the N8 is designed to cover both ends of the premium market.

Battery options and range variants

The 105.792 kWh pack powers the shorter-range configurations, rated at 840 km and 800 km, while the 130.15 kWh pack delivers the 1,003 km and 970 km figures. BYD has not published charging specifications for the N8 family yet, but the pack sizes and the brand’s recent focus on flash charging suggest fast-charging capability will be a headline feature when the model is formally launched.

Dimensions and design

The Denza N8 measures 5,150 mm long and 1,999 mm wide, with a wheelbase of 3,075 mm; the N8L stretches to 5,200 mm. The models retain the design language of the current generation, with parallel slim taillights and the Denza logo at the rear. The wheelbase is long enough for three-row seating, although the filings do not specify the final interior layout.

From 2023 to 2026: how far Denza has come

The N8 was first launched in 2023, when the pure electric version used a battery with a maximum capacity of 108.8 kWh, while the plug-in hybrid version delivered a combined range of 1,030 km. Three years later, the BEV’s pure electric range is comparable to the hybrid performance of its predecessor — a measure of how quickly battery capacity has grown.

The development also reflects BYD’s ability to pack larger batteries into its vehicles through vertical integration. Its Blade Battery technology and in-house cell production keep costs under control even as pack sizes grow, which is central to how the group can offer a 130.15 kWh pack in a production SUV.

What 1,000 km means in practice

A 1,003 km CLTC figure should be read with some caution: Chinese CLTC ratings are generally more optimistic than WLTP or EPA figures, and real-world range depends heavily on speed, temperature and load. Still, even a real-world range in the 700-800 km range would be well above what most premium electric SUVs deliver today, and would make the N8 viable for cross-country driving in most markets without frequent charging stops.

The larger point is that BYD is treating range as a premium-market weapon. Instead of chasing the lowest price in the segment, the N8 family is being positioned around maximum capability — the same logic that drives its flagship sedan strategy with the Da Han and Da Tang models.

Competitive context: the 1,000 km club

Crossing the 1,000 km mark in official filings requires either very large battery packs or advanced chemistries, and only a handful of Chinese models have published figures in this territory. Some rivals use semi-solid-state or high-nickel packs to reach similar numbers, while the Denza N8 approach is notable for relying on a large LFP-based Blade Battery pack — the same chemistry BYD has standardized across most of its lineup.

That matters for cost and safety. LFP cells are cheaper and generally considered more thermally stable than high-nickel chemistries, so a 1,000 km LFP SUV would, if confirmed in production, challenge the assumption that ultra-long range has to come with premium battery costs.

Denza’s sales momentum

Denza is BYD’s high-end brand, and its sales crossed 20,000 units for the first time in June this year. In July, the brand sold 19,196 vehicles, a month-on-month decline of 5.7% but a 68.8% increase year-on-year. The N8 family is expected to give Denza a stronger presence in the large premium SUV segment, where demand has been growing faster than the overall EV market in China.

What range leadership means for the premium segment

A 1,000 km-plus BEV range would put the Denza N8 among the longest-range electric SUVs on sale in China and strengthens Denza’s positioning against rivals in the premium segment. For overseas buyers considering models such as the Denza N9, the development also shows the brand’s focus on large battery packs and range leadership as a differentiator.

Range anxiety remains one of the main reasons premium buyers hesitate to switch to electric, particularly in markets with sparse fast-charging networks. A production vehicle that delivers close to the filed figures would give BYD a strong talking point in exactly those markets.

What to watch next

The key details to watch are the official launch timing, pricing, and whether the N8 family will be offered outside China, where Denza has been expanding through select markets. Also watch the final production range numbers, since CLTC figures are generally more optimistic than WLTP ratings, and how BYD positions the N8L against the N8 in price.
