BYD Opens Pre-Orders for Sealion 08, Its First Plug-In Hybrid SUV With Flash Charging

Table des matières

BYD opened pre-orders in China for the Sealion 08 SUV on Thursday, August 13, setting up the launch of the flagship model of its Ocean lineup. The plug-in hybrid DM-i version is listed at 230,000 to 260,000 yuan ($33,880 to $38,300), while the all-electric version is priced from 250,000 to 280,000 yuan, according to BYD’s mobile app.

Pre-orders: prices, deposit and timing

The pre-order announcement came from Zhang Zhuo, head of sales for BYD’s Ocean lineup. Chinese buyers can reserve the Sealion 08 with a refundable 2,000-yuan deposit, which includes priority in the production queue — a common practice for BYD’s higher-volume launches and a signal that the company expects strong initial demand.

The price ranges place the Sealion 08 squarely in the premium segment for Chinese SUVs. The DM-i version starts at 230,000 yuan and reaches 260,000 yuan, while the EV version spans 250,000 to 280,000 yuan. That positions the flagship above the Seal 08 sedan, which went on sale on July 2 with a starting price of 196,900 yuan.

How it fits the Ocean lineup

The Ocean lineup is BYD’s modern, design-led family, anchored by the Dolphin, Seal, Seagull and Sea Lion model lines. The Sealion 08 becomes the largest vehicle in that family, taking the flagship role from the Seal 08 sedan and giving the Ocean range a full-size SUV to match the Dynasty lineup’s Tang and Han flagships.

The naming also matters for buyers: the "Sea Lion" badge has been used on BYD’s mid-size SUVs in export markets, where the Sea Lion 07 DM-i et Sea Lion 07 EV are already familiar products. The 08 flagship extends that identity upward in size and price.

Flagship dimensions and design

The Sealion 08 is offered in five-seat and six-seat layouts and measures 5,115 mm long, 1,999 mm wide and 1,800 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,030 mm — large enough to compete with full-size premium SUVs in global markets. The model debuted at the Beijing Auto Show on April 24, and its exterior follows the Ocean lineup’s design language with split LED headlights up front.

First PHEV SUV with flash charging

The Sealion 08 DM-i is BYD’s first plug-in hybrid SUV with flash charging, the ultra-fast charging technology the company unveiled in March with peak single-gun power of up to 1,500 kW. With the second-generation Batterie de lame, vehicles can charge from 10% to 97% in nine minutes when using flash charging, according to BYD.

Chassis and driver assistance

The SUV also comes with the DiSus-A closed dual-chamber air suspension, rear-wheel steering and the God’s Eye 5.0 assisted driving system. Rear-wheel steering is still rare in large SUVs and improves low-speed maneuverability despite the long wheelbase, while the air suspension targets the ride comfort expected in this price class.

Five-seat and six-seat interiors

BYD revealed the interior for the first time on July 31, showing a six-seat layout with a ceiling-mounted screen for the second row and second-row zero-gravity seats. The 2+2+2 arrangement is a popular configuration for premium family SUVs in China, and it gives the Sealion 08 a clear differentiator against five-seat rivals.

The second-row focus is deliberate: in the Chinese market, buyers of SUVs in this price class are often transporting families or business passengers, so rear-seat comfort and entertainment features can decide the purchase. The ceiling-mounted screen and zero-gravity seats suggest BYD is competing directly with the premium extended-range SUVs that have dominated this segment.

Flash charging needs infrastructure

Flash charging performance is only useful where the network can support it, and BYD has been expanding its ultra-fast charging infrastructure alongside its vehicles. Earlier this month, the company converted a Shanghai gas station into a fast-charging site with Sinopec, one of several moves to put megawatt-class charging within reach of urban drivers. The Sealion 08’s launch timing aligns with that network build-out.

The four-flagship premium push

The Sealion 08 is the second of two flagship models in the Ocean lineup, following the Seal 08 sedan. BYD is reshaping its premium offerings around four flagship models: the Seal 08 and Sealion 08 from Ocean, plus the Da Tang SUV, launched in June, and the Da Han sedan, expected to be unveiled at the Chengdu Auto Show next week.

The strategy reflects BYD’s effort to move upmarket without abandoning its volume base. Flagship models carry the newest technology — flash charging, advanced driver assistance and premium interiors — while mainstream models such as the Qin and Seagull lines defend the affordable end of the market.

Sealion series momentum

The Sealion series has been one of BYD’s fastest-growing product lines. It sold 49,057 units in July, up 54.14% year-on-year, and 227,415 units in the first seven months, accounting for 10.21% of BYD group sales. Buyers comparing the lineup can review the Sea Lion 07 DM-i et Sea Lion 07 EV.

What it means for overseas buyers

For overseas buyers and dealers, the Sealion 08 shows how BYD is moving flash charging into larger, more expensive vehicles. The pricing also puts the flagship SUV in direct competition with premium six-seat EVs and plug-in hybrids from Chinese and global brands, from Li Auto’s extended-range SUVs to joint-venture flagships.

The mix of a large six-seat cabin, plug-in hybrid range and fast charging is designed to cover the main objections buyers in emerging markets often raise about EVs: limited range, slow charging and cramped interiors. If the Sealion 08 reaches export markets, it could become one of the most versatile premium BYD models available outside China.

For fleet buyers, the combination of a plug-in hybrid version and a pure electric version is also practical: the DM-i can serve routes where charging is scarce, while the EV version covers urban and fixed-route duties. That flexibility is one reason BYD has led China’s plug-in hybrid export growth.

Que regarder ensuite ?

The next milestones are the formal launch date, final pricing and delivery timing. Overseas, watch whether BYD extends the model to export markets where its plug-in hybrid SUVs have been among its strongest sellers, and whether flash charging becomes a standard feature on the rest of the Sealion family.
