How the BYD Seal smart key system works

The Seal treats keys as options rather than a single device. You can mix and match: carry the fob for daily use, keep the card in your wallet as a backup, and share a phone key with family members without ever handing over hardware.

Availability of each method can vary slightly by market and trim, so check the owner’s manual for your specific vehicle. Everything below follows the standard Seal setup.

The smart key fob: every button explained

The electronic smart key looks simple, but each button does more than the label suggests.

Lock, unlock, and boot

Press the lock button once to lock all doors — the turn signals flash to confirm. Press the unlock button to unlock all doors. Press and hold the boot button to open the trunk remotely, which is handy when your hands are full of shopping bags.

The fob also has a small indicator LED that flashes when the vehicle receives your command. If it does not flash, the press was not registered — usually because of distance or a weak battery.

Remote start

The remote start/stop button does not need the key to be inside the car. Press and hold it for about two seconds and the vehicle starts remotely; the turn signals flash three times to confirm. This is the feature to use on freezing mornings or hot afternoons to warm or cool the cabin before you get in. Availability can depend on market and trim, and the vehicle requires valid conditions such as the doors being closed.

The door handle microswitch trick

You do not actually need to press any fob button to open the car. While carrying the smart key, press the microswitch on the left or right front door handle and the doors unlock; press it again after closing and the doors lock. This is the fastest way in and out when the key is in your pocket or bag.

Remote window control: ventilation in one press

One of the most useful fob tricks is also one of the least known. With the ignition off, press and hold the unlock button and all four windows lower at the same time. On a hot day, this vents the trapped heat out of the cabin before you open the door.

Press and hold the lock button and all four windows close together. That is the safety net for the moment you realize a window was left open after walking away.

Both functions can be switched on or off in the infotainment screen under Vehicle Settings → Window and Lock. If the windows do not move when you hold the buttons, this is the first setting to check.

Walk-away auto-locking and the anti-theft sequence

The Seal can lock itself without any button press. Enable walk-away auto-locking in the touchscreen settings, and the car locks automatically when it detects the smart key has moved out of range.

The security system adds a second layer after that. About 30 seconds after locking, the anti-theft alarm arms itself. And if you unlock the car but do not open any door within 30 seconds, the doors re-lock and the system re-arms on its own — a quiet safeguard against walking off after an accidental unlock.

NFC key card: the battery-free backup

The Seal’s NFC key card is a credit-card-sized key that never needs charging. It works on the same short-range system as contactless payments, which means it has no battery inside to go flat.

How to use it

• Lock or unlock: place the card on the NFC mark on the driver’s side mirror.
• Start the car: place the card on the NFC area at the front of the cubby box, then start normally.
• Reading distance is only 1–2 cm, so the card must touch or sit very close to the marked area.

What to avoid

The owner’s manual is clear about two mistakes. First, do not leave the NFC card on the wireless charging pad while charging is active — the charging field can interfere with the card. Second, do not attach metal objects such as key rings or metal phone cases to the card, because metal blocks the electromagnetic signal and the vehicle may not read it.

Keeping the card in a wallet slot away from other cards with chips is the safest routine.

Bluetooth digital key: your phone as a key

The BYD App can turn your smartphone into a Bluetooth digital key. Once set up, the car recognizes the phone as an authorized key and connects as you approach.

First-time setup

1. Download the BYD App and register your account.
2. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the phone.
3. Open the app near the vehicle so the phone and car pair automatically, or connect manually from the app’s key management page.
4. Follow the on-screen prompts to authorize the phone key.

After the initial setup, the Bluetooth key works even without an internet connection. Two practical limits to know: in dense vehicle environments such as multi-storey car parks, Bluetooth range can shrink and the connection may take a moment longer; and a small number of phone models have compatibility restrictions, so the app will tell you before you complete setup.

Sharing the digital key

From app version 2.8, released in July 2025, BYD added keyless vehicle sharing for the Seal and other models including the Atto 3, Dolphin, Sealion 6 and 7, and Shark 6. Up to five trusted users can be authorized through the app, each going through a short five-step approval flow. This is how a spouse, teenager, or chauffeur gets driving access without a physical key — and how the owner can revoke that access remotely later.

NFC digital key: phone and smartwatch

The Seal also supports an NFC digital key on compatible smartphones and, in supported markets, the Apple Watch. Instead of a Bluetooth connection, the phone’s NFC antenna performs the same tap actions as the card:

• Hold the phone’s NFC antenna near the driver’s side mirror mark to lock or unlock.
• Place it on the NFC area at the front of the cubby box to authorize starting.
• Start promptly after the NFC permission is granted. If the car does not respond immediately, tap the mirror area again.

You can activate the NFC digital key from the BYD App’s digital key management page, or on the infotainment screen under Vehicle Settings → Window and Lock → Digital Key management. Some regions also let you activate it directly from the vehicle touchscreen with a valid physical key inside.

Smart key battery: warning signs and replacement

The fob uses a CR2032 button cell battery. Battery life depends on use, but the car warns you before the fob fails completely. Common signs include a low-battery warning on the instrument cluster, shorter remote range, and inconsistent responses to button presses.

How to replace it

1. Slide the lock-up button on the fob to release the back cover.
2. Remove the mechanical key stored inside.
3. Swap the old battery for a fresh CR2032, positive (+) side facing up.
4. Reinsert the mechanical key and snap the cover back into place.

Keep spare button cells out of reach of children — they are small enough to be swallowed, and they are not toys.

Mechanical key and no-power start

Even a completely dead fob does not have to leave you stranded. The Seal has a full emergency path that uses no electronics at all.

Opening the door manually

The hidden mechanical key lives inside the fob. To reach the lock, push the left side of the hidden door handle to reveal the keyhole. Insert the mechanical key and turn it counterclockwise to unlock, or clockwise to lock. Keep the mechanical key inside the fob at all times so it is there when you need it.

Starting with a dead fob

If the fob battery is flat, the car can still detect the key using its passive chip:

1. Unlock the driver’s door with the mechanical key.
2. Sit in the driver’s seat with the dead fob.
3. Hold the fob directly against the Start/Stop button on the dashboard.
4. Press the brake pedal and press the Start/Stop button while the fob is touching it.

The Start/Stop button contains a short-range reader that reads the key’s passive chip without battery power. Replace the CR2032 battery as soon as possible after using this method — the car will keep starting this way in a pinch, but it is a backup, not a long-term solution.

Troubleshooting: mistakes BYD Seal owners make

Most smart key problems are not car faults — they are habits. The most common ones:

• Never trying remote window control. Holding unlock for a few seconds transforms hot-weather parking.
• Leaving the NFC card on the wireless charging pad. The manual warns that the charger interferes with the card.
• Storing the fob next to phones, laptops, or other electromagnetic devices for long periods. Strong electromagnetic fields drain the fob battery faster.
• Not knowing the no-power start method. It takes ten seconds and can save a trip to the dealer.
• Leaving the mechanical key at home. BYD designed the fob to carry it, so keep it inside.
• Assuming a lost key is a quick fix. Replacement and re-pairing go through a BYD authorized dealer, so treat every key as valuable.
