BYD specifies cold tire pressures of 250 kPa (36 PSI) front and 290 kPa (42 PSI) rear for the Seal, as shown on the label on the driver’s side door frame and in the owner’s manual. Why tire pressure matters more on an EV

The Seal weighs roughly 1,900–2,100 kg depending on version, because the 82.56 kWh Blade Battery sits low under the cabin floor. That is several hundred kilograms more than a comparable petrol sedan, and it changes how tires are loaded.

More weight means each tire works harder, which makes correct inflation more critical. The owner’s manual warns that driving with underinflated tires leads to uneven tire wear, affects maneuverability and power consumption, and may cause air leakage due to overheating.

Range is the extra factor EV owners feel first. Low pressure raises rolling resistance, and on a vehicle whose WLTP range reaches around 570 km in some versions, even a small efficiency loss changes real-world range on a long trip.

The correct BYD Seal tire pressures

The recommended cold tire pressures are the same across the standard fitments and apply to all Seal variants, both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive:

The 250/290 kPa figures come directly from the BYD Seal specifications in the owner’s manual and the tire pressure label, which also lists the wheel dynamic balance requirement. If your vehicle is a newer facelift model or a market-specific version, always trust the label on your own car — it overrides any guide, including this one.

Why front and rear pressures differ

The Seal’s pressures are not symmetrical for a reason. The battery pack runs along the vehicle floor, and more of the vehicle’s weight sits over the rear axle than in a typical front-engined sedan.

The higher rear figure of 290 kPa (42 PSI) compensates for that rear weight bias. It prevents the rear tires from squatting under load, keeps the car stable at speed, and helps both axles wear evenly. Using the same pressure front and rear is one of the most common — and most costly — mistakes owners make, because the rear tires wear out prematurely.

Hot versus cold readings: which one to use

Always set tire pressure when the tires are cold. The owner’s manual defines cold as:

  • At least three hours after the vehicle was stopped, or
  • Within the first 1.6 km of driving, when tires are still at ambient temperature.

Once the car has been driven, the readings climb. The manual states that it is normal for pressure measured while tires are hot to be 30–40 kPa (0.3–0.4 bar) higher than the cold value.

That leads to the most important rule in this guide: if you check the tires after a drive and see, for example, 280 kPa front and 320 kPa rear, do not release air. Those are normal hot readings. Deflating to hit the cold specification on a hot tire leaves the tires underinflated when they cool down.

How to check tire pressure yourself

Checking pressure takes five minutes and needs only a tire gauge plus an air source.

  1. Park the car and let the tires cool for at least three hours, or drive no more than 1.6 km before checking.
  2. Remove the valve cap on the first tire and press the gauge firmly onto the valve.
  3. Read the pressure and compare it with the 250/290 kPa (36/42 PSI) target for front and rear.
  4. Add air if low, or release a little if clearly above target. Recheck after every adjustment — gauges and pumps vary.
  5. Replace the valve cap and repeat for all four tires, including the rear pair.
  6. After inflating, drive briefly and confirm the instrument cluster readings update to match.

The manual also recommends starting the vehicle statically before each drive to check that tire pressure meets the manufacturer’s requirements. A quick glance at the cluster display before moving off costs nothing and catches a slow leak early.

How TPMS works on the Seal

The Seal’s Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) displays live pressure for each tire on the instrument cluster and alerts you when a value falls outside the safe range.

What the warnings mean

  • Low pressure alarm: the system warns when a tire’s pressure drops below the safe threshold. Act on it the same day — top up to the cold specification and watch the reading.
  • Fault warning: if the tire pressure fault warning light flashes and then stays on, with "No Signal" or "Please check TPMS" on the cluster, the system cannot read one of the sensors. The manual directs owners to check the tire pressure monitoring module and look for nearby electromagnetic sources.
  • "No Signal" display: this indicates the pressure signal at that wheel is being interfered with, or the monitoring module may be damaged. A BYD authorized dealer or service provider handles module faults.

TPMS limits

The system warns, but it does not prevent driving with abnormal pressure. The manual is clear that the driver must check pressure before each trip. Reception can also be affected in areas with strong electromagnetic interference, so a momentary "No Signal" after parking near power equipment is not automatically a sensor failure.

Underinflation is the bigger risk because it is silent. The tire flexes more with every revolution, heat builds, and on a heavy EV the extra load accelerates both wear and the chance of air leakage from overheating. Overinflation trades comfort and grip for a range gain too small to notice.

Adjusting for seasons and loads

Tire pressure is a gas, so it follows the weather. Pressure drops as temperature falls and climbs as it rises.

  • Winter: a common rule of thumb is roughly 7 kPa (about 1 PSI) per 10°C of temperature change. Check monthly from autumn through spring and top up as needed.
  • Summer: hot readings after driving will look high. As covered above, do not deflate a hot tire to the cold spec.
  • Full load: if your door frame label lists a full-load pressure, use it when carrying five adults plus luggage. In many markets that figure sits about 10–20 kPa above the normal cold value.
  • Motorway driving: sustained high-speed driving does not require a higher cold setting — the standard label values apply, and the system accounts for the higher hot readings on its own.

Tire health and when to replace

Pressure is only half of tire care. The tread and sidewalls deserve a quick look every time you check the air.

  • Tread depth: the legal minimum in most markets is 1.6 mm. Wear bars — small raised strips across the tread grooves — appear as the tire approaches that limit.
  • Wear bars exposed: the manual states that tires with exposed wear bars have suffered serious performance loss and must be replaced.
  • Sidewall damage: cracks, bulges, or visible cord mean immediate replacement regardless of tread depth.
  • Uneven wear: if one tire wears on one edge only, check alignment and suspension before fitting new tires.
  • Typical EV tire life: 40,000–60,000 km is a common expectation, depending on driving style. Regenerative braking helps by reducing harsh braking forces, but the Seal’s weight and torque still demand regular pressure checks.

Common mistakes BYD Seal owners make

  • Deflating hot tires to match cold specs. Hot readings 30–40 kPa above the cold value are normal. Releasing air creates an underinflated tire later.
  • Using the same pressure front and rear. The Seal needs 250 front and 290 rear; equal pressures cause premature rear tire wear.
  • Ignoring TPMS alerts. The system warns but cannot prevent driving. A low-pressure alarm deserves attention the same day.
  • Never checking manually. TPMS is a monitor, not a replacement for a monthly gauge check and a look at the tread.
  • Overinflating for better range. The gain is marginal, and the trade-off — harsh ride, less grip, center wear — is not worth it.
