Are body kits worth it? For most owners, a body kit is worth it when you want a lower, sportier look and choose parts made for your exact car. It is not worth it if you expect more speed, a higher resale price or a cheaper insurance quote. A well-fitted kit is a styling upgrade, and that is how to judge its value.
This guide sets out the real pros and cons of a body kit, what it can mean for your car insurance and resale value, and how to get the most from the money you spend. It is written for car owners thinking about their first kit, and for the shops and installers who advise them.

Are body kits worth it? The short answer
A body kit pays off in looks and personal satisfaction, not in money. Whether that is worth it depends on what you want from the car and how long you plan to keep it. This quick table sums up who tends to be happy with a kit and who tends to regret it.
| A body kit is usually worth it if you… | It is usually not worth it if you… |
|---|---|
| Want your car to look lower, wider or more finished | Expect a real gain in speed, handling or range |
| Plan to keep the car for several years | Plan to sell or hand back the car soon |
| Can buy parts made for your exact model | Can only find universal parts that need cutting to fit |
| Are happy to tell your insurer about the change | Want to keep your premium exactly the same |
| Have a budget for fitting, and paint if needed | Have a budget for the parts only |
Many owners end up in the middle: a front lip, or a lip with matching side skirts, gives a clear change for less money.
The pros of a body kit
1. A clear change in how the car looks
This is the main reason people buy a kit. A front lip, side skirts, a rear diffuser and a spoiler work together to make the car look lower and more planted, and even a single lip makes the nose look sharper without changing the bumper. Our guide to o que é um lábio dianteiro explains how lips differ from splitters and air dams.

2. A factory-style fit when the parts are made for your model
Vehicle-specific parts are shaped for the factory bumpers and sills, so the result looks planned rather than added on, and fitting is usually quicker. Universal parts often need trimming and filling. Our guide to kits de carroçaria universais vs específicos para veículo shows how to check fitment before you buy.
3. Some protection for the painted bodywork
A lip or side skirt sits at the lowest point of the body. If you clip a kerb or a speed bump, it often takes the scuff instead of the painted bumper or sill. Replacing a lip is usually simpler than repairing and repainting a bumper. Side skirts can also catch some of the stone chips thrown up by the front wheels. Our article what do side skirts do covers this in more detail.
4. You can do it in stages
You do not have to buy everything at once. Starting with a front lip and adding skirts, a diffuser and a spoiler later spreads the cost. See kit de carroceria completo ou peças individuais for help planning the order.
The cons of a body kit
1. It is mostly cosmetic
On a road car driven at legal speeds, most bolt-on body kits are styling parts. They will not make the car noticeably faster or change cornering grip in daily driving. If performance is your goal, tyres and suspension will do far more.
2. The total cost is more than the parts
The price of the parts is only the start. Painting, fitting and shipping can add as much again, sometimes more, depending on where you live and whether you want the parts colour-matched. Our guide to quanto custa um kit de carroçaria breaks down each of these costs so you can budget properly.
3. Lower ground clearance
Any part that hangs below the bumper brings the front edge closer to the ground. Think about the steep driveways, car park ramps and speed bumps you meet every week before choosing a deep lip. A slim lip that follows the bumper is the safer choice for daily driving.

4. Sensors, cameras and fitting quality
Modern cars carry parking sensors, radar and cameras in and around the bumpers. A badly chosen or badly fitted part can trigger false parking warnings or get in a camera’s view. Poor fitting can also leave uneven gaps or loose parts. Our step-by-step guide on como instalar um body kit covers the checks to make.

Do body kits affect car insurance?
In most cases, yes, a body kit counts as a modification. Insurers usually treat any change made after the car left the factory as a modification, including purely cosmetic ones such as lips, skirts, spoilers and diffusers. Optional extras fitted by the car maker at the factory are normally not modifications.
What this means in practice:
- Tell your insurer before or as soon as you fit the parts. If you don’t, a claim could be reduced or refused, and the policy could be cancelled. This applies even to small changes.
- Your premium may or may not change. Cosmetic parts often have a smaller effect than performance changes, but the insurer decides. Some charge more because the car costs more to repair; others may not change the price at all.
- Some policies exclude body kits. For example, Allianz UK’s car insurance FAQs (checked October 2026) list bodywork changes such as spoilers, body kits and side skirts among the modifications its standard cover does not include. Other insurers and specialist modified-car insurers take a different view, so shop around.
- Ask whether the parts themselves are covered. If the car is damaged, a policy may pay to repair the standard car but not to replace the kit. Keep your receipts and photos so you can show what was fitted and what it cost.
Policy wording differs by country and insurer, so declare the parts and get the answer in writing.
Do body kits affect resale value?
A body kit rarely adds its own cost to a car’s resale price. Most used-car buyers and dealers look for a standard car in good condition, so a heavily modified car can take longer to sell and may sell for less. On the other hand, tasteful, well-fitted parts made for that model can appeal to some private buyers, especially other enthusiasts.
A few habits protect the value of your car:
- Choose parts that fit to the existing bodywork. Add-on parts that fit to the factory bumpers and tailgate are easier to remove than replacement panels.
- Keep any original parts you remove, so the car can be returned to standard before sale.
- Use a good installer and keep the invoice. Neat gaps, matching paint and no extra holes make the car easier to sell either way.
- Check your finance or lease agreement. If the car is leased or on finance, the agreement may require you to return it in its original condition, or to ask permission before modifying it.

Is a body kit legal?
In most countries a body kit made for your car is legal if it has no sharp edges, does not stick out beyond the car’s outline and does not cover lights, number plates or the driver’s view. Some countries also require changes to be declared or inspected, so check our country guides:
- Europe: Reino Unido, Espanha, Dinamarca, Polónia, Noruega e Turquia
- Middle East: UAE, Arábia Saudita, Catar, Omã, Kuwait e Bahrein
- Asia-Pacific: Austrália
How to get the most value from a body kit
If you decide a kit is worth it for you, these steps help you spend the money well:
- Buy parts made for your exact model, and send photos if you are unsure of your version.
- Start with the part that changes the look most, usually the front lip.
- Pick a finish you can live with. A finish that needs no painting keeps the cost down; colour-matched paint adds to the bill. Most Marvix exterior styling parts are ABS, with PP on selected kits; our guide to PP vs ABS vs fibra de vidro vs fibra de carbono explains how the materials compare.
- Budget for fitting. A good fit is what makes a kit look right.
- Declare it to your insurer, keep receipts, and keep the original parts.

Perguntas Frequentes
Do body kits increase a car’s value?
Rarely. Most buyers want a standard car, so a kit seldom adds its cost to the resale price. Well-fitted parts made for that model can help a car stand out to some private buyers, and keeping the original parts lets you return it to standard.
Do body kits make insurance more expensive?
They can. A body kit is usually treated as a modification, so you must declare it. Some insurers raise the premium, some don’t, and some standard policies exclude body kits. Ask your insurer before you fit the parts.
Os body kits melhoram o desempenho?
Not in a way you will notice on the road. Most bolt-on kits for road cars are styling parts. Real aerodynamic gains need parts designed and tested for that purpose.
Are body kits worth it on an electric car?
Yes, if you want the look. A typical lip, skirt and diffuser set adds little weight. Choose parts made for your model so that parking sensors and cameras stay clear.
Can I remove a body kit before selling the car?
Usually, if the parts fit to the existing bumpers and sills and you kept any original parts. Removal may leave fixing points or adhesive marks, so ask your installer how the parts are fixed before fitting.
