What Do Side Skirts Do? Styling, Protection and Aerodynamics Explained

Table of Contents

Side skirts are the long panels that run under the doors along the rocker panel (sill). On most road cars they are mainly a styling upgrade: they deepen the side line, hide the sill and give the body a lower look. They can also take light splash and rock chips off the sill paint. True race-car aerodynamics from a skirt are rare on street kits, so think of side skirts as a styling upgrade first.

This guide explains what side skirts do, how they compare with other kit parts, what materials you will usually see, and how to choose skirts for a BYD. If you are still learning the whole kit, start with what a car body kit is, then come back here for the side pieces.

Owners fitting one car and shops stocking several models can use the same checklist: shape for the car, finish you can live with, and clearance for doors, jacking points and driveways.

What do side skirts do on a road car?

In plain terms, a side skirt fills the visual gap between the wheel arches and deepens the lower body line. Factory rocker panels are often plain and high; a skirt adds a longer, cleaner edge under the doors.

What they usually deliver on street cars:

  • Styling — a continuous side line from front lip to rear diffuser when the rest of the kit is fitted.
  • Sill coverage — less visible scuffing on the painted rocker when you get in and out of kerbside parking.
  • Light splash shielding — some mud and water that would hit the sill hits the skirt first.
  • Modest aero intent — race cars use deep skirts to manage underbody airflow; road skirts are far shallower and are not engineered like a track package.

They do not replace proper underbody panels, and they do not turn a family EV into a race car. Treat them as exterior styling with a bit of sill protection, not as a performance part, unless a listing states otherwise.

Styling: why skirts change how the car looks

From the side, the eye follows the lowest hard line. Raise that line (stock sill) and the car can look taller. Drop it with a skirt and the same ride height reads lower and more planted, even if you never change the suspension.

Skirts work best when they match the front lip and rear diffuser. A deep lip with stock sills, or aggressive skirts with a plain bumper, often looks unfinished. Our guide to a full body kit or individual parts helps you decide whether to start with skirts alone or plan the set.

Finish choices matter as much as shape:

  • Gloss or piano black — popular contrast on light paint; shows swirl marks if you wash poorly.
  • Body colour — quieter look; needs paint-shop work after a dry-fit.
  • Primed — ready for your painter.

Protection: sills, paint and everyday use

Side skirts sit where shoes, kerbs and road grit meet the car. A well-shaped skirt can spare the factory sill paint from light chips and door-exit scuffs. That is useful on EVs with long doors and low sills.

What skirts will not do:

  • Stop a solid kerb strike — plastics can crack or scuff.
  • Replace mud flaps or undertrays for heavy off-road dirt.
  • Hide damage if the mounting tabs are already broken — fix or replace rather than forcing a fit.

After fitting, keep jacking points clear and measure both sides so one skirt does not sit lower than the other. Uneven skirts look worse than no skirts at all.

Aerodynamics: what road-car skirts can and cannot do

On a race car, side skirts help seal the sides of the floor so the underbody can make downforce. Those skirts run close to the ground, use stiff structures and are part of a full aero package.

Most aftermarket skirts for road cars are:

  • Shallow compared with track skirts
  • Designed around door clearance and speed bumps
  • Sold as styling parts first

You may feel a small change in wind noise or spray behaviour; you should not expect documented lap-time or range gains unless a manufacturer publishes tested data for that exact part. Judge road skirts on looks, fit and sill protection.

If you are choosing other aero-looking pieces, read what a front lip is and trunk spoiler vs roof spoiler so the whole side and rear line stay consistent.

Materials: ABS and PP on street skirts

Most Marvix exterior styling parts are ABS, with PP on selected kits and lips. Both are common for skirts:

MaterialTypical feel on skirtsPaint / shop notes
ABSStiff, holds a sharp edge, popular for gloss finishesBody shops know it well; follow their primer advice
PPMore flexible on light knocksNeeds the right adhesion promoter and primer

Fiberglass and carbon are less common for full-length street skirts and bring their own weight, repair and cost trade-offs. For a wider material comparison across kit parts, see PP vs ABS vs fiberglass vs carbon fiber body kits. Always read the material on the product page for the SKU you order.

Vehicle-specific skirts vs “universal” strips

A skirt shaped for your model follows the sill contour, arch openings and door bottoms. A generic strip may need trimming, leaves uneven gaps or sits where the door hits it.

Before you buy:

  1. Match the exact model name on the listing (Seal is not Sealion 7; Dolphin is not Atto 3).
  2. Check photos of the part on that model when they exist.
  3. Plan door swing, jacking points and driveway angles.
  4. If the bumper or sill has been repaired, send photos before ordering.

Prefer vehicle-specific parts for BYD exteriors. Universal pieces are a last resort when no model-specific part exists, and even then you should expect more fitting time. Our guide to universal vs vehicle-specific body kits explains how to check fitment before you buy.

Side skirts on BYD models

BYD sedans and SUVs have long doors and clean sill lines, so skirts show clearly in side photos and in the street. Browse the full range under BYD side skirts, or open a model archive such as BYD Seal accessories, Sealion 7 accessories, Dolphin accessories, Song Plus DM-i / SEAL U DM-i or Atto 3 accessories.

Seal owners who want the full side-and-rear plan can use our BYD Seal body kit guide, which places skirts next to lips, diffusers and spoilers. The side skirts for BYD Seal and side skirts for BYD Sealion 7 pages show the finish and fitment details for each model.

Pair skirts with other exterior pieces from front bumper lips, rear bumper diffusers, spoilers & wings and BYD body kits when you want one continuous lower line.

Not sure which generation you have? Send model, year and side photos via contact and we will check fitment before you order.

Fitting and clearance checklist

Skirts are long parts. A careful dry-fit saves paint and plastic:

  • Lay the skirts flat indoors before fitting so they settle.
  • Line up with the front and rear arches first, then the sill.
  • Open and close every door slowly — no contact with the skirt.
  • Mark jacking points and keep them reachable.
  • Measure height at front, middle and rear on both sides.
  • Re-check fasteners after the first week of driving.

For a full walkthrough of fitting, see our guide on how to install a body kit. For budgeting paint and labour alongside the parts, see how much a body kit costs. Local modification rules still apply — our guides on body kits in the UK and body kits in Australia are a starting point for those markets.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do side skirts do?

They extend the rocker panel under the doors for a lower, cleaner side line, add light splash and scuff protection to the sill, and complete the look of a body kit. On most road cars they are styling parts, not race aero.

Do side skirts improve aerodynamics?

Track cars use deep skirts as part of a sealed floor. Street skirts are shallower and are mainly visual. Do not expect meaningful downforce or range claims unless the maker publishes tests for that part.

Are side skirts only for looks?

Looks are the main reason people fit them. Secondary benefits are sill coverage and a more finished kit line when lips and diffusers are fitted too.

Will side skirts scrape on speed bumps?

They lower the visual line and can reduce clearance slightly depending on shape and how the car sits. Dry-fit, check your usual ramps and driveways, and choose a design that still clears your daily roads.

Can I fit side skirts without a full body kit?

Yes. Many owners start with skirts alone. Matching a front lip and rear diffuser later usually looks more complete — see full kit or individual parts.
