A wide body kit makes a car physically wider: flared arches or replacement wings cover wider wheels and tyres, and the factory arches are often cut to make room. A bolt-on lip kit adds a front lip, side skirts, a rear diffuser or a spoiler to the existing panels and leaves the width unchanged. For most EVs, a lip kit is the simpler, lower-risk choice.
Both are called body kits, so the terms get mixed up when you shop. This guide explains what each one involves, how they compare on cost, fitting and road rules, and what changes when the car is electric.
What is a wide body kit?
A wide body kit (often written “widebody kit”) widens the car at the wheel arches. It is usually part of a bigger build, because the point of the extra width is to fit wider wheels and tyres, often with a different wheel offset, spacers or lowered suspension.

There are two main types:
- Bolt-on or riveted flares (over-fenders). Separate arch extensions are screwed or riveted over the original wings and rear quarters. In most cases the factory arch lip has to be cut back so the wider wheels can move freely, so the change is hard to undo.
- Replacement panels. Whole front wings, and sometimes rear quarters and bumpers, are replaced with wider moulded panels. This looks more factory-made but is more work, and rear quarters are usually part of the car’s body structure.
Wide body parts are commonly made from fibreglass, polyurethane or carbon fibre, and they are normally painted to match the car. A full build therefore includes the kit, wheels, tyres, suspension work, paint and a skilled body shop.
What is a bolt-on lip kit?
A lip kit is a set of add-on parts that follow the shape of the original bumpers and sills. A typical kit includes:
- Front lip under the front bumper. Our guide on what a front lip is explains how it differs from a splitter or air dam.
- Side skirts along the sills between the wheels. See what side skirts do.
- Rear diffuser on the lower rear bumper. Read what a rear diffuser does on a road car to see why it is mostly a styling part.
- Spoiler on the boot lid or roof edge.
“Bolt-on” here simply means the parts attach to existing panels with screws, clips or automotive tape, with no cutting of the body. Some parts need a few small holes; others are no-drill, such as our no-drill front bumper lip for the BYD Seal. Because the wheels, tyres and width stay the same, a lip kit can usually be removed later without bodywork repairs.

Wide body kit vs lip kit: the main differences
The two options differ far more in the work involved than in how they look in photos.
| Wide body kit | Bolt-on lip kit | |
|---|---|---|
| What changes | Car width at the arches, wheel and tyre size, stance | Lower edges of the bumpers and sills, sometimes a spoiler |
| Cutting the body | Often needed for flares; panel replacement for full kits | No |
| Wheels and tyres | Wider wheels and tyres are part of the plan | Original wheels stay |
| Paint | Usually painted to match | Often fitted in a black finish; painting optional |
| Fitting | Body shop job | Possible at home with basic tools, or a short shop visit |
| Reversible? | Rarely, once arches are cut | Usually |
| Cost drivers | Kit, wheels, tyres, suspension, paint, labour | Parts, optional paint, fitting |
| Road rules | More likely to need an inspection or approval | Fewer issues, but sharp edges and sensors still matter |

Which suits an EV?
Most of what makes wide body builds demanding gets harder on an electric car. Here is what to weigh up.
Range
An EV’s range is sensitive to drag and rolling resistance. Wider tyres and a wider front profile increase both, so a wide body build with wider wheels will usually cost some range. A lip kit leaves the tyres and frontal width as they were. Its effect on aerodynamics is small, because on a road car these parts are mainly styling.
Sensors and driver-assist cameras
Electric cars tend to carry radar, parking sensors and cameras in and around the bumpers, and blind-spot radar is often mounted behind the rear bumper corners. Wider rear quarters and new bumpers can get in their way. Lip parts sit lower, but you should still check that nothing covers a sensor and test everything after fitting.
For a fuller look at how body kits affect EV range, parking sensors and ADAS cameras, see our dedicated guide.
Ground clearance and the battery
The battery pack sits under the floor of most EVs, so the car’s underside is already close to the road. If you also lower the car for a wide body stance, ramps and speed bumps become a real concern. With a lip kit, choose a lip depth that suits your driveway.
Warranty, finance and resale
Cutting into the body of a new car can complicate warranty claims and repairs, and many EVs are leased or financed. A lip kit that can be removed before the car is sold or returned keeps your options open. If you are unsure, ask your dealer before you change anything.
In short: a wide body kit suits an owner planning a full build with wheels, suspension and paint, who accepts the cost and the permanent change. For most EV owners who want a sportier look on a daily car, a lip kit is the better fit.
Are wide body kits legal?
It depends on the country. Most rules care about wheels and tyres staying covered by the bodywork, overall width, sharp edges and lights, so a wide body build with wider wheels is more likely to need an inspection or approval than a lip kit. Check the rules where the car is registered:
- Europe: Spain, Denmark, Poland, Norway, the UK and Turkey
- Middle East: UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain
- Asia-Pacific: Australia
Lip-style body kits for BYD models
None of our current BYD kits are wide body kits. Our range is lip-style parts such as front lips, side skirts, rear diffusers and spoilers, plus replacement bumpers for some models. Most Marvix exterior styling parts are ABS, with some PP options.
For the Seal, there is a gloss black body kit for BYD Seal, and our BYD Seal body kit guide walks through each piece. Sealion 7 owners can start with the BYD Sealion 7 body kit guide.

There are also complete kits for other body styles, such as the gloss black PP body kit for BYD KING sedan and the PP exterior full body kit for BYD Dolphin hatchback. If you are choosing between a full kit and single parts, see full body kit or individual parts.
Before you order, compare the fitting steps in how to install a body kit, and send us photos if you are unsure which version of the car you have.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a wide body kit need wider wheels?
In practice, yes. The flared arches are designed to cover wheels and tyres that sit further out. With the original wheels, the arches would look empty and the effect is lost.
Can you fit a wide body kit to an electric car?
It can be done, but it usually means cutting arches, fitting wider tyres and checking sensors on a car with a floor-mounted battery. Expect some range loss and a more complex approval process in many countries.
Is a wide body kit reversible?
Rarely. Once the factory arches have been cut for flares, the original panels need repair or replacement to go back to standard. Lip kits are usually removable.
Do lip kits reduce EV range?
Any effect is small compared with changing wheels and tyres, because a lip kit keeps the original tyres and frontal width. Treat it as a styling upgrade, not an efficiency one.
Which is cheaper, a wide body kit or a lip kit?
A lip kit, by a wide margin, because a wide body build adds wheels, tyres, suspension, paint and body shop labour on top of the kit itself.
